| |
A missionary is someone sent by Jesus Christ just as He was sent by God. The great controlling factor is not the needs of people, but the command of Jesus. The source of our inspiration in our service for God is behind us, not ahead of us. The tendency today is to put the inspiration out in front— to sweep everything together in front of us and make it conform to our definition of success. But in the New Testament the inspiration is put behind us and is the Lord Jesus Himself. The goal is to be true to Him— to carry out His plans.
Personal attachment to the Lord Jesus and to His perspective is the one thing that must not be overlooked. In missionary work the great danger is that God’s call will be replaced by the needs of the people, to the point that human sympathy for those needs will overwhelm the meaning of being sent by Jesus. The needs are so enormous, and the conditions so difficult, that every power of the mind falters and fails. We tend to forget that the one great reason underneath all missionary work is not primarily the elevation of the people, their education, nor their needs, but is first and foremost the command of Jesus Christ— “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations. ..” (Matthew 28:19).

How do you know your being called?
First, there is an internal compelling desire to serve the Lord in some capacity. Also, you cannot deny that God is leading you to perform a task or serve in some capacity. Your heart for people in need and those who never heard the Good News, drives you to search, seeking and prayerfully looking for guidance.
This desire may have come from seeing something on TV, hearing the needs from another missionary or… a prompting that seems not to go away. It may have started from an evangelism group, homeless outreach, or other service type group. You may have gone on a mission trip and clearly seen the needs of people in other regions of the world. Your view and purpose in life may have changed because of one of those listed experiences. You may be bothered by the lack of outreach to the lost and focus on material things. You love or want to love the unlovable - Men, women and or children desperately in need. Needs from starvation and lack of food, not having clean water, those with no shelter, being orphaned, being orphaned and homeless. Those in need of protection from abuse and mutilation needs of people specially trained (medically, engineering, agriculture, education, etc.) and the need of knowing where real Hope and love comes from.
All-in-all, let's not forget those who genuinely love people, and may not be necessarily concerned about making the most money in the world. But more so, making the biggest impact in the world with their lives through helping people physically, spiritually and economically in serving and sharing.

First time and short term missions
|

You may still have some questions on where, what type of ministry, the need for formal training or on the job training. Not knowing all the answers to these questions is not uncommon. And yes, some go by faith and the Lord’s leading. But it’s important to prepare as much as possible prior. For those who have never participated in a mission trip, we suggest you start on a short-term missions trip along with another advisor of the group. The advisor will handle all the details of the trip and do any translating that is necessary. Your main goal will be to acquire your passport, educate yourself on the hosting ministry's mission, study about the area you will be traveling too, and raise the necessary funds required. A 3-7 day short-term missions trip in another country could change your life and help you in your appointment as a missionary.
For those who do know where you want to serve and are already serving in the region now. We want to help support you in your work as a Missionary. As a Ministries United Missionary Member, you are given several benefits in helping you raise your support and keep those donors year after year. As a Missionary, it is important to have prayer covering and the necessary legal, financial accounting when becoming a Missionary. We want to help supply both in addition to any Credentialing/Licensing that you need in being certified and recognition for your service.
